on mytube: S-factor

If you’re wondering whether the previous post was a prelude, I must say I didn’t plan for it to be that way. I start work in a matter of hours, thus it won’t be long before I will be deprived of such hilarity on Youtube. No wait, there must be another way for me to obtain such intense entertainment…

stupidity is a virtue.

Yes. I have to religiously tune in to the latest episode of S-factor, every Sunday 10pm only on Channel 5 (mind you, that’s an honest statement; not some cheap advertising effort on behalf of Mediacorp).

Not long after the global credit crisis kicked in, women in Singapore have begun to suffer from an identity crisis of sorts. On the political front, we have the verbal cat-fight between the old and new guard at AWARE. Now I’m really clueless about the idea behind ‘Christian feminism’; it’s quite an oxymoron if you adopt a historical or theological framework to the whole thing. Christianity is inherently and absolutely patriarchal, so how can a right-wing evangelical group ever champion the rights of women when their ultimate mantra is submission to masculine authority? HUGE contradiction there, don’t you think?

The other point to think about is whether AWARE is actually a welfare organisation for desperate housewives or a ‘feminist’ institution, because when you actually define yourself according to the latter, you are making some radical claims concerning sexual equality. For one, radical feminists (of which many are self-declared lesbians) do not subscribe to the idea of ‘woman’ at all. Woman, they believe, is nothing but a social construct created in relation to Man. Therefore, to paraphrase the work of feminist scholar Monique Wittig: if you have a cunt and you like women, you cannot be called a woman.

On the other end of the feminine spectrum, you will encounter a group of young, fresh-faced bourgeois girls. Firmly embedded in a heterosexual context (I can only assume this since no smart lesbian would want to win $10,000 and stick herself on FHM for all the dicks to see), these girls say and do things that I would think, all women think and talk about from time to time. The best part is, the girls on S-factor are so BAD at it…that it just cracks me up every time. Quite often, I wonder if there’s a need for women to go all intellectual and start debating about political issues that may not even change our society. If you had less sulky activists(e.g. AWARE) and more of those bimbos (e.g. S-factor), wouldn’t the world be filled with more fun, laughter, peace and joy?

And to all my girlfriends that pledged loyalty to the series: you go girl!

P.S: I’m really disappointed that Holly’s out of the game, but delighted that Sonia’s back. I do not know where all the money on her boobs went to, but she’s one fine Dutch lady with incredible Singlish!
